CNN —Last week, I sat in Yale University’s Beinecke Plaza leading around 50 classmates in nigunim — wordless melodies from the Jewish Hasidic tradition — and other Jewish songs and prayers. As a fourth-year Yale student, I find this characterization to be deeply frustrating, as it could not be further from the truth. Indeed, Yale Jews for Ceasefire exists because of — not in spite of — our Jewish values. Our present moment is a precarious one for the Jewish people, fraught with disagreement about what our Jewish values mean to us. At Yale, organizers of all faiths continue to build a community that is dedicated to moving forward in collaboration with, not opposition to, Jewish students.

☆ Yale apologizes for past ties to slavery

CNN —Yale University has issued a formal apology for its historical ties to slavery. The apology is part of Yale’s “ongoing work to understand its history and connections to slavery,” the university said in a news release Friday. Yale also announced the release of a book, “Yale and Slavery: A History,” by professor David W. Blight with the Yale and Slavery Research Project, and a range of actions and initiatives based on the project’s findings. “Confronting this history helps us to build a stronger community and realize our aspirations to create a better future,” Yale President Peter Salovey said in the release. In April 2022, Harvard dedicated $100 million to research and redress its “extensive entanglements with slavery,” President Lawrence Bacow said.

Peter Salovey, the president of Yale, announced Thursday that he will step down in June after 11 years in office, during which he increased the university’s endowment, student enrollment, and its racial, ethnic and economic diversity. A decade ago, the number of first-generation students was 12 percent. Yale University is being sued over what students say is "systemic discrimination" against students with mental health disabilities. The officials never discussed alternate accommodations with her that would have allowed her to stay at Yale while she sought mental health treatment, the lawsuit says. The advocacy group, which is led by Yale alumni and current students, fights for better mental health accommodations at the school. Its policies are harshest "on students with mental health disabilities from less privileged backgrounds, including students of color, students from poor families or rural areas, and international students," it says. "The need for student mental health and wellness support continues to increase, and Yale remains committed to responding to this need," Peter Salovey said.
